Nach der Heimkehr kam 1945 die Befreiung!? Das „schizophrene Psychogramm“ der ostbelgischen Seele (so der belgische Journalist Hubert Jenniges) in Sachen nationaler Zugehörigkeit wurde 1947 auch von den englischen Behörden der Kontrollkommission in Berlin bestätigt. Auf die dort eingegangene Frage, ob die Eupen-Malmedyer nun als Belgier oder Deutsche zu behandeln seien, hieß es: „The area of Eupen-Malmedy presents many problems. The inhabitants of this area have changed their nationality about three times in the last thirty odd years, according to the changing fortunes of war and the claimants of the respective Belgian and German Authorities. It remains that the population of Eupen-Malmedy have alternated between being good Belgians and good Germans.
